What is your idea ?

Vicki : The idea is to make jewelry out of recycled sterling silver and reduce the waste because getting silver and gold out of a mine is a very consuming process in terms of resources. Most of the gold and silver comes from very poor countries and the people are not being paid fairly. There are also a lot of components in our phones and in other industries that can be used to make jewelry,

How did you come up with your idea?

Vicki: There is a trend in the jewelry industry to turn to more ethical sources and if they can use recycled metals then that helps the environment a lot. I think we will also see it soon in big stores like Tiffany.

If you were going to give one piece of advice to a family who is considering going down the Eco friendly path, what would that be?

Vicki: I would advise them not to buy jewelry that is made from metals that you don't know where they came from. If you see something very cheap just don't buy it. I know it is tempting and it may be fashionable, but it will turn your finger green. You may be exposed to metals that are considered human carcinogens. If there is sterling silver that is very cheap, then something is strange. Somewhere, someone is not getting paid fair along the chain. Ask the person who is selling the jewelry from where they are getting their metal and whether they make it. When you buy just ask.
